Forskning

Det pågår olika typer av forskning kring SMA runt om i världen där man på olika sätt försöker finna lösningar på symptom eller helt bota sjukdomen.

  • Ersätta eller korrigera den felaktiga SMN1 genen
  • Förbättra kvalitén på det protein som ”ersättningsgenen” SMN2 producerar
  • Skydda motorneuronerna som påverkas av en mindre mängd SMN protein.
  • Muskelskydd som hindrar eller återställer funktion i musklerna.

Annan forskning syftar till att öka levnadsstandard och välbefinnande, till exempel genom optimal respiratorisk vård eller god nutrition.

Läkemedelsstudier

Läkemedel tar lång tid att ta fram och de måste testas noga innan de får föras ut på marknaden. En del läkemedel för SMA har kommit så långt i utvecklingen att de provas ut i så kallade kliniska prövningar. På hemsidan clinicaltrails.gov samlas de flesta internationella kliniska försök. Bolag med läkemedel under utveckling

  • Biogen äger rättigheterna till läkemedlet Spinraza (Nusinersen) vilket ökar produktionen av fullvärdigt SMN-protein från SMN2 generna. Spinraza blev godkänt av EMA i juni 2017. Spinraza är det hittills enda godkända läkemedlet för SMA.
  • Novartis utvecklar läkemedel som ökar produktionen av fullvärdigt SMN protein.
    • Avexis köptes nyligen av Novartis och söker nu godkännande för deras genterapi som syftar till att helt ersätta den icke fungerande SMN1 genen.
  • Roche utvecklar läkemedel som sig mot att hjälpa kroppen producera mer SMN protein, men även läkemedel för ökat skydd mot muskelatrofi.
  • Cytokinetics utveckalar läkemedel för ökat skydd mot muskelatrofi.
